Learning • Discipline • Expression

I strive to instill a love of learning and of music in my students. I teach both the young beginning student as well as the beginning adult. I also teach the intermediate to advanced student. While I use reading methods with my beginning students, I focus on classical repertoire with my intermediate and advanced students. With all of my students, I focus on expressive playing.

Additionally, in my teaching, I endeavor to give students skills that will help them succeed in life whether they continue in music or not. I teach them to work hard and to sustain focus as they work towards longterm goals. Learning piano requires discipline and dedication which is necessary in all aspects of life.

I believe development of a healthy technique is crucial to piano playing. Accordingly, I make technique a strong focus for all of my students. I believe that if students acquire appropriate technique, they will be able to play anything they wish, sight-read more efficiently, and prevent overuse injuries.

However, I can only do so much as the teacher. Parental support is crucial in the development of musical skills. I only see each student for 30-45 minutes per week while parents see their children every day. Parents and I work together to help each student progress and reach their musical potential.

Teaching piano is a challenging and rewarding endeavor. It involves becoming not only an educator, but also a friend to one’s students. Teaching piano is about instructing in music, technique, expression, and giving students the vision and discipline to work towards longterm goals.
